The board of chosen freeholders of any county of the second class may, in its discretion, adopt a resolution providing for the payment of a pension to any widow of any former county clerk who retired after having served in such capacity continuously for a period in excess of 15 years and who prior to his service as county clerk had served the county in one or more offices, positions or employments continuously for an additional period in excess of 15 years, making a total period of service in excess of 30 years. Such widow shall receive from the county, during the term of her natural life, or as long as she remains unmarried, an annual pension equal to 1/3 of the annual salary paid to her husband at the time of his retirement.
