§ 50-6-221 — Receipts for payments

(a) Whenever payment of compensation is made to a surviving spouse for the surviving spouse's use, or for the surviving spouse's use and the use of a child or children, the written receipt of the payment by the surviving spouse shall acquit the employer in this and all other jurisdictions of the entire injury and all its damages. (b) Whenever payment is made to any person eighteen (18) years of age or over, the written receipt of the person shall acquit the employer in this and all other jurisdictions of the entire injury and all its damages. (c) (1) Whenever payment is made to a person under eighteen (18) years of age, or to a dependent child as defined in § 50-6-210(b) over eighteen (18) years of age, the payment shall be paid to a duly and regularly appointed guardian or trustee of the child, and the receipt of the guardian or trustee shall acquit the employer in this and all other jurisdictions of the entire injury and all its damages and shall be in lieu of any claim of the parents of the child or minor for loss of services. (2) Where the amount of compensation due a person under eighteen (18) years of age does not exceed the sum of two hundred fifty dollars ($250), the court may, in its discretion, direct the amount of compensation due the minor be paid as provided by title 34, chapter 1.
