If any such prison officer shall die within five years from the passage of this act and his widow, minor children or dependent parents, as the case may be, shall not be entitled to the pension hereunder, and if such prison officer shall have continuously paid his annual assessments or contributions up to the time of his death, the annual contributions or assessments deducted from the salary of such employee shall be returned by the pension commission to the personal representative of such deceased prison officer; provided, however, that if any such prison officer shall be killed in the line of duty within the five years from the passage of this act, the pension commission may, in its discretion, set aside a yearly sum, other than the total annual contributions or assessments paid by such e
