Except for good cause, the director shall suspend for a period of no less than 30 days and no more than 180 days, except as provided in section 6 of this act, the license to operate a motor vehicle of any person who accumulates a. 12 or more points in a period of 2 years or less, or b. 15 or more points in a period greater than 2 years, or c. at least 12 points but fewer than 15 points in a period greater than 2 years, unless the licensee notifies the division in writing within 10 days of the date of mailing of the proposed notice of suspension of his intention to attend a driver improvement course that is approved by the director, and satisfactorily completes such course.
