(1)If a consumer credit transaction agreement requires a consumer to insure or preserve the collateral and the consumer fails to do so, after providing the consumer prior notification and a reasonable opportunity to perform, the creditor may pay for the performance of insuring or preserving the collateral on the consumer's behalf and may add the payment to the unpaid debt balance. Within a reasonable time after advancing any sums, the creditor shall state to the buyer in writing the amount of the sums advanced, any charges with respect to this amount, and any revised payment schedule and, if the duties of the consumer performed by the creditor pertain to insurance, a brief description of the insurance paid for by the creditor including the type and amount of coverages.
