(a)The department may establish and operate a death benefit program for the payment of death benefits to deceased employee beneficiaries. The department may provide these benefits by the creation of a reserve account, by obtaining group life insurance, or both. However, the department may not establish or modify a death benefit program after June 30, 1989, without the approval of the county fiscal body which shall not reduce or diminish any death benefits set forth in any death benefit program that was in effect on January 1, 1989.
(b)Benefits payable under a group life insurance policy established under subsection (a) must be in reasonable amounts. Benefits payable from a reserve account established under subsection (a) may not exceed twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000). [Pre-Local G
