4. a. A mobile intensive care paramedic may perform advanced life support services, provided that the paramedic is following protocols which have been approved pursuant to paragraph (3) of subsection a. of section 8 of this act, any standing orders the department may issue, or if the paramedic maintains direct voice communication with and is taking orders from a licensed physician or physician directed registered professional nurse, both of whom are affiliated with a mobile intensive care hospital which is approved by the commissioner to provide advanced life support services. b.
