Authorization for a sponsor to join and participate in the state length of service awards program, and to establish service awards programs for volunteer or call firefighters, and emergency medical personnel of a municipality shall result from the affirmative vote of 2/3 of the legislative body of the municipality having control over the fire department or emergency medical group. Once this program has been established, it may be discontinued by following the same voting process.
