85-20-1002 . Findings and purpose.
(1)It is the policy of the state to seek negotiated settlements of federal and Indian reserved water rights claims in Montana under Title 85, chapter 2, part 7.
(2)Pursuant to this policy, the reserved water rights compact commission commenced negotiations with the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine Tribes which compose the Fort Belknap Indian Community of the Fort Belknap Reservation and the United States.
(3)A compact, 85-20-1001 , has been agreed to between the state of Montana and the Fort Belknap Indian Community of the Fort Belknap Reservation that, among other things, provides an allocation of water to the tribes in settlement of their water right claims and provides protection for certain water rights arising under state law.
