§1601. Membership; condition of employment; exceptions The membership of the retirement system shall be composed as follows:

(1)All persons who shall become employees as defined in R.S. 11:1581(10), after the date on which the retirement system is established, except those specifically excluded under Paragraph (3) of this Section, shall become members as a condition of their employment; however, in the case of assistant district attorneys, they must be paid an amount determined by the board but not less than eleven thousand one hundred dollars per year. Employees of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association who were employed prior to August 15, 1997, shall have from August 15, 1997, to January 15, 1998, to exercise the option to terminate their membership in this system.
