Every bank and trust company shall, when required by the department, publish its statement of condition in the form in which it is required by the department, as prescribed in section 1 of this chapter. Such statement of condition shall be published in a newspaper printed and published in the city or town in which such bank or trust company has its principal office, if a newspaper be printed in such city or town or, if no newspaper be printed in such city or town, then in the newspaper printed and published in the city or town nearest thereto in the same county or in an adjoining county. All such statements of condition shall be published at the expense of the bank or trust company making such statement, and such proof of publication shall be furnished the department as it may require.
