On behalf of the department of
transportation, the chief engineer has the authority to take and hold and to contract
to take and hold title to real property, or any interest therein, in the name of the
department of transportation, whether such real property or interest is used, or
intended to be used, for right-of-way or maintenance purposes or for any other
purpose authorized by law.
