Text

For the purposes of this chapter, the term—

(a)"Secretary" means the Secretary of the Interior;
(b)"Native" means a citizen of the United States who is a person of one-fourth degree or more Alaska Indian (including Tsimshian Indians not enrolled in the Metlaktla 1 Indian Community) Eskimo, or Aleut blood, or combination thereof. The term includes any Native as so defined either or both of whose adoptive parents are not Natives. It also includes, in the absence of proof of a minimum blood quantum, any citizen of the United States who is regarded as an Alaska Native by the Native village or Native group of which he claims to be a member and whose father or mother is (or, if deceased, was) regarded as Native by any village or group. Pub. L. 108–452, §2, Dec. 10, 2004, 118 Stat. 3576, provided that: "In this Act [see Short Title of 2004 Amendment note set out under section 1601 of this title]:
"(1) Native allotment.—The term 'Native allotment' means an allotment claimed under the Act of May 17, 1906 (34 Stat. 197, chapter 2469) [former 43 U.S.C. 270–1 to 270–3].
"(2) Secretary.—The term 'Secretary' means the Secretary of the Interior.
"(3) State.—The term 'State' means the State of Alaska."
