§ 244 — Lighting cars on elevated railroads in cities of over twelve hundred thousand inhabitants

§ 244. Lighting cars on elevated railroads in cities of over twelve\nhundred thousand inhabitants. Every corporation operating an elevated\nrailroad in any city of over twelve hundred thousand inhabitants in this\nstate, computed according to the state enumeration had in eighteen\nhundred and ninety-two, shall equip all cars used for the transportation\nof passengers with the most approved system of lighting passenger cars\nnow in use upon railroads, either by electricity or gas of not less than\neighteen candle power, and every such corporation is prohibited from\nusing kerosene or coal oils as a means of lighting any of its passenger\ncars. Any violation of the provisions of this section shall render any\nsuch corporation liable to pay a fine or penalty of fifty dollars for\neach and every day, for each and every passenger car run over its\nrailroad which is not equipped and lighted as provided herein; and such\nfine may be recovered by any passenger on such railroad who may sue\ntherefor; and any violation of the provisions of this section on the\npart of any such railroad corporation shall also be a misdemeanor.\n
