maintenance fund.] The commissioner shall prescribe the duties of his subordinates. Any subordinate may be required to give bond in such sum as the commissioner may prescribe, conditioned for the faithful performance of his duties. If any such bond be executed by a surety company, the expense thereof shall be paid out of the state lands maintenance fund. All expenses incurred by the commissioner or his subordinates in inspecting, appraising or investigating state lands shall be paid out of said fund. All expenses incurred by the commission composed of the governor, surveyor general or other officers exercising the function of the surveyor general and attorney general in directing, locating, inspecting, appraising and investigating state lands shall be paid out of said fund.
