1.The Legislature finds and declares that: a. Ellis Island occupies a significant and unique place in America's heritage; it was the primary United States immigration station from 1892 to 1954 when more than 12 million people passed through the station complex - the greatest surge of migration in America's history; and today, 40% of Americans can trace their family history from Ellis Island, which was added to the national park system in 1965 and placed under the operational supervision of the National Park Service as a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in recognition of its importance in American history, architecture, and culture.
