§ 52:14-1 — "Department" and "head of department" defined
New Jersey·Title 52 STATE GOVERNMENT, DEPARTMENTS AND OFFICERS
As used in this article: "Department" means and includes every state institution, commission, board, department, bureau or state agency, whether or not it receives legislative appropriations. "Head of department" means and includes the chief executive officer of that department, by whatever name he may be designated.
