Text
A sheriff who fails to pay to the county treasurer any money received by him for the county, immediately on receipt thereof, or the amount of any fine, forfeiture or costs, immediately after he has voluntarily or negligently suffered a prisoner liable therefor to escape, shall forfeit treble the amount thereof, with double costs of suit, to be recovered by the treasurer for the use of the county, and he may be removed from office by the superior court.
