Section 108. The rates of fare charged by street or elevated railway companies for the transportation of pupils of the public day schools or public evening schools, of vocational schools subject to chapter seventy-four, or of private schools, between a given point from or to which it is necessary for them to ride in traveling to or from the schoolhouses in which they attend school and their homes, whether such schoolhouses are located in the city or town where the pupils reside or in another city or town, shall not exceed one half the regular fare charged by such street or elevated railway company for the transportation of other passengers between said points, and tickets for the transportation of pupils as aforesaid, good during the days or evenings on which said schools are in session, s
