The department of highways may acquire by donation, or in its own name, may expropriate any property which is necessary to carry out the purposes of this Part. In expropriation suits, the Attorney General shall act as attorney for the department. Any judgment rendered or allowance agreed upon by the highway department shall be paid as a part of the expense of building the bridge. The department may take possession of any such property immediately upon filing petition for its expropriation. Otherwise, the procedure shall be as provided by law for expropriation by the state.
