(a)Upon the effective date of this act, or when any county comes under it, all employees then in the sheriff's office, whose positions are under the provisions of this act, shall be considered to be holding such positions temporarily and at the pleasure of the sheriff, until January 1, of the year next following the date upon which the county comes under the provisions of this act, on which date, unless such employee has elected to be classified under this act, his employment shall be terminated: Provided, That any employee of the sheriff's department having the rating of class A patrolman or detective or serving in a permanent supervisory or administrative position on the effective date of this act, shall receive the status of permanent employee in the classified service with a comparabl
