§ 153-50 — Township committee on literacy

(a) The township board of trustees may appoint a township committee on literacy of at least 5 members, and shall initially establish the length of the members' terms for one, 2, and 3 years, staggering the terms so that after the initial appointments, the term of each member shall be for 3 years, and that the smallest possible portion of the terms on the committee will expire in any single calendar year. (b) The township committee on literacy may provide programs to combat and prevent illiteracy and alliteracy and meet the basic skill needs of local residents. (c) The township committee on literacy shall cooperate with existing alliteracy and literacy programs, libraries, other governmental entities, and with any other organization, association, agency, or person in the fostering, development, and provision of local programs designed to combat and prevent illiteracy and alliteracy and to meet the basic skill needs of local residents. (d) The township committee on literacy, with the approval of the township board of trustees, may contract with other governmental entities and with any other organization, association, agency, or person in order to provide programs to combat and prevent illiteracy and alliteracy and to meet the basic skill needs of local residents. (e) Members of the township committee on literacy shall select one of its members to serve as chairperson and may elect any other officers as necessary.
