§ 2310-338 — Asthma prevention and control program

(a) Subject to appropriations for this purpose, the Department shall establish an asthma prevention and control program to provide leadership in Illinois for and coordination of asthma prevention and intervention activities. The program may include, but need not be limited to, the following features: (1) Monitoring of asthma prevalence in the State. (2) Education and training of health care professionals concerning the current methods of diagnosing and treating asthma. (3) Patient and family education concerning the management of asthma. (4) Dissemination of information on programs shown to reduce hospitalization, emergency room visits, and absenteeism due to asthma. (5) Consultation with and support of community-based asthma prevention and control programs. (6) Monitoring of environmental hazards or exposures, or both, that may increase the incidence of asthma. (b) In implementing the program established under subsection (a), the Department shall consult with the Department of Healthcare and Family Services and the State Board of Education. In addition, the Department shall seek advice from other organizations and public and private entities concerned about the prevention and treatment of asthma. (c) The Department may accept federal funding and grants, and may contract for work with outside vendors or individuals, for the purpose of implementing the program established under subsection (a).
