A. For purposes of this section, "emergency vehicle" means a vehicle designed to be used under emergency conditions to (i) transport personnel and equipment and (ii) support the suppression of fires and mitigation of other hazardous situations. B. An emergency vehicle shall not exceed the following weight limitations when operated on any interstate highway:

(i)24,000 pounds on a single steering axle;
(ii)33,500 pounds on a single drive axle;
(iii)52,000 pounds on a tandem rear drive steer axle; and (iv) 62,000 pounds on a tandem axle that is not a tandem rear drive steer axle. However, the maximum gross weight of such emergency vehicle shall not exceed 86,000 pounds.
