* § 31. Exceptions. The provisions of this act except as provided in\nsection 29 of this act shall not be construed to apply to any sparring\nor boxing contest or exhibition conducted under the supervision or the\ncontrol of the New York state national guard or naval militia where all\nof the contestants are members of the active militia; nor to any such\ncontest or exhibition where the contestants are all amateurs, sponsored\nby or under the supervision of any university, college, school or other\ninstitution of learning, recognized by the regents of the state of New\nYork; nor to any such contest or exhibitions where the contestants are\nall amateurs sponsored by or under the supervision of the U.

For the purpose of this act, an\namateur is deemed to mean a person who engages in boxing, sparring or\nwrestling contests and exhibitions where no cash prizes are awarded to\nparticipants, and where the prize competed for shall not in value exceed\nthirty-five dollars or, in boxing, a maximum amount established by the\nU.S. Amateur Boxing Federation. Any individual, association, corporation\nor club, except elementary or high schools or equivalent institutions of\nlearning recognized by the regents of the state of New York, who or\nwhich conducts an amateur contest pursuant to this section must register\nwith the U. S. Amateur Boxing Federation or its local affiliates and\nabide by its rules and regulations.\n * NB Repealed September 1, 2016\n
