§ 171. Definitions. 1. The term "dangerous caustic or corrosive\nsubstance" means each and all of the acids, alkalis, and substances\nnamed below:
(a)hydrochloric acid and any preparation containing free\nor chemically unneutralized hydrochloric acid (HCI) in a concentration\nof ten per centum or more;
(b)sulphuric acid and any preparation\ncontaining free or chemically unneutralized sulphuric acid (H2SO4) in a\nconcentration of ten per centum or more;
(c)nitric acid or any\npreparation containing free or chemically unneutralized nitric acid\n(HNO3) in a concentration of five per centum or more;
(d)carbolic acid\n(C6H5OH), otherwise known as phenol, and any preparation containing\ncarbolic acid in a concentration of five per centum or more;

The term "dangerous caustic or corrosive\nsubstance" means each and all of the acids, alkalis, and substances\nnamed below: (a) hydrochloric acid and any preparation containing free\nor chemically unneutralized hydrochloric acid (HCI) in a concentration\nof ten per centum or more; (b) sulphuric acid and any preparation\ncontaining free or chemically unneutralized sulphuric acid (H2SO4) in a\nconcentration of ten per centum or more; (c) nitric acid or any\npreparation containing free or chemically unneutralized nitric acid\n(HNO3) in a concentration of five per centum or more; (d) carbolic acid\n(C6H5OH), otherwise known as phenol, and any preparation containing\ncarbolic acid in a concentration of five per centum or more; (e) oxalic\nacid and any preparation containing free or chemically unneutralized\noxalic acid (H2C2O4) in a concentration of ten per centum or more; (f)\nany sale of oxalic acid other than cerium oxolate and any preparation\ncontaining any such salt in a concentration of ten per centum or more;\n(g) acetic acid or any preparation containing free or chemically\nunneutralized acetic acid (HC2H302) in a concentration of twenty per\ncentum or more; (h) hypochlorus acid, either free or combined, and any\npreparation containing the same in a concentration so as to yield ten\nper centum or more by weight of available chlorine, excluding calx\nchlorinate, bleaching powder, and chloride of lime; (i) potassium\nhydroxide and any preparation containing free or chemically\nunneutralized potassium hydroxide (KOH), including caustic potash and\nVienna paste, in a concentration of ten per centum or more; (j) sodium\nhydroxide and any preparation containing free or chemically\nunneutralized sodium hydroxide (NaOH), including caustic soda and lye,\nin a concentration of ten per centum or more; (k) silver nitrate,\nsometimes known as lunar caustic, and any preparation containing silver\nnitrate (AgNO3) in a concentration of five per centum or more, and (l)\nammonia water and any preparation yielding free or chemically uncombined\nammonia (NH3), including ammonium hydroxide and "hartshorn," in a\nconcentration of five per centum or more.\n 2. The term "misbranded parcel, package, or container" means a retail\nparcel, package, or container of any dangerous caustic or corrosive\nsubstance for household use, not bearing a conspicuous, easily legible\nlabel or sticker, containing (a) the name of the article; (b) the name\nand place of business of the manufacturer, packer, seller, or\ndistributor; (c) the word "POISON," running parallel with the main body\nof reading matter on said label or sticker, on a clear, plain background\nof a distinctly contrasting color, in uncondensed gothic capital\nletters, the letters to be not less than twenty-four point size, unless\nthere is on said label or sticker no other type so large, in which event\nthe type shall be not smaller than the largest type on the label or\nsticker, and (d) directions for treatment in case of accidental personal\ninjury by the dangerous caustic or corrosive substance: Provided, that\nsuch directions need not appear on labels or stickers on parcels,\npackages, or containers at the time of shipment or of delivery for\nshipment by manufacturers or wholesalers for other than household use.\n
