Any person who shall knowingly make any false statements or shall falsify or permit to be falsified any record or records of the retirement system in any attempt to defraud such system, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be punishable therefor under the laws of the State of New Jersey. Should any change of the record or any mistake in the records result in any member or beneficiary receiving from the retirement system more or less than he or she would have been entitled to receive had the records been correct, then, upon the discovery of any such error, the commission shall correct such error and, so far as possible, shall adjust the payments which may be made to or by such person in such a manner that the equivalent of the benefit to which he or she was correctly entitled shall b
