40A:9-91. Every register of deeds and mortgages may appoint a deputy register of deeds and mortgages to hold office during the pleasure of the said register and upon the occurrence of a vacancy in the office of the register by expiration of term, death, resignation or otherwise, the deputy register shall have the same powers and perform all the duties of the office of the register of deeds and mortgages until the vacancy is filled as provided by law. During the absence or disability of the register of deeds and mortgages the deputy register shall have the powers of the register and perform the duties of the office.
