a.Whenever the governing body of a sparsely populated municipality with a population between 100 and 500 persons according to the most recent federal decennial census and the governing body of an absorbing municipality have both adopted ordinances proposing and consenting to the consolidation of their respective municipalities, the municipal clerk of each municipality shall cause the question of consolidation to be submitted to the registered voters of each municipality on the date for the next general or regular municipal election occurring not less than 60 days after the adoption of the ordinance of the absorbing municipality. The question submitted pursuant to subsection a of this section shall be deemed approved and adopted only if a majority of those voting on the question in each of the municipalities votes in favor of the question. c. The results of the election in each municipality in which the question was submitted shall be certified in accordance with Title 19 of the Revised Statutes, and the county clerk shall, in turn, not more than five days after said certification, notify the director of the election results.
