Upon the filing with the county clerk of such petition of the registered voters of any county, an election shall be held in the county upon the question of adopting any of the optional plans of government provided in articles 3 through 6 inclusive of this act. The petition calling for such election shall be signed by a number of registered voters not less than 15% of the number of persons registered to vote in the county as of 40 days before the primary or general election next preceding the date of filing of such petition. The petition shall designate the plan to be voted upon and the question to be placed upon the ballot shall be in the same form as is required by section 16 of this act. L.1972, c. 154, s. 20, eff.
