§ 34:1-57 — Workmen's compensation bureau; director; compensation

The workmen's compensation bureau shall consist of the commissioner who shall act as chairman, a director, deputy commissioners of compensation appointed by the commissioner; and such referees and other employees as may, in the judgment of the commissioner, be necessary. Appointments under this section shall be made in accordance with the provisions of Title 11, Civil Service. The director of the bureau shall be designated by the commissioner from among the deputy commissioners of compensation with approval of the Governor. Such deputy commissioner shall also serve as secretary of the bureau, and may continue to perform the duties of a deputy commissioner of compensation. He shall receive compensation of nine thousand five hundred dollars ($9,500.00) per annum, and upon his designation he shall retain all of his prior civil service status as a deputy commissioner of compensation under the provisions of Title 11, Civil Service. The director, subject to supervision and direction of the commissioner, shall: (a) be the administrative head of the bureau; (b) prescribe the organization of the bureau, and the duties of his subordinates and assistants, except as may otherwise be provided by law; (c) direct and supervise the activities of all members of the bureau; (d) make an annual report to the commissioner of the work of the bureau, which report shall be published annually for general distribution at such reasonable charge, not exceeding cost, as the commissioner shall determine.
