In a suit for the possession of specific personal property, the bond required of the plaintiff and that which may be given by the defendant shall be in double the sum stated in the affidavit as the value of the property claimed; but the defendant or his agent may, on the taking of the property claimed or at any time before the delivery of the same to the plaintiff, demand in writing an appraisement thereof, which appraisement shall then be made in the same manner as by the law, for the time being, appraisement is directed to be made of property exempt from execution; and if such appraised value exceed the value stated in the affidavit then such property shall not be delivered to the plaintiff unless a new bond be given in double such appraised value, and in other respects similar to the bo
