County commissions of third and fourth class counties may provide motor vehicles for the use of law enforcement personnel who are county employees. Such motor vehicles shall be used by authorized personnel only, and each sheriff shall prescribe rules and regulations for the use of the motor vehicles. The county commission may acquire title to such vehicles in the name of the county and may purchase insurance on the vehicles. County commissions may sell or otherwise convey such vehicles and may do all acts consistent with maintenance and operating costs of the vehicles at county expense. The motor vehicles authorized herein shall be of such size, type, make and horsepower as is determined by the county commission.
