The circuit clerk of Lewis County shall attend the circuit court at Canton in person, or by deputy, and perform such duties in respect to said court as is or may be required of the clerks of the circuit courts of this state, for which he shall receive the same fees as are now or may be provided by law for similar services in like courts of record.  He shall procure and keep a seal to be used as the seal of said court.  He shall keep an office in said town of Canton to be provided by the board of trustees of said town, and shall put the same in charge of a deputy, for whose acts he shall be responsible, and who shall have the same care and management of all books and papers pertaining to said court, and exercise the powers and perform all the duties of his office in the absence of his princ
