There is hereby established as a pilot project the "International Economic Development Exchange Program".  The department of economic development, with the advice of the advisory committee established in section 173.265 , shall administer the program, except that the department shall administer the program without additional staff or salary for such program.  The program shall be established to encourage international exchanges at industrial and commercial business enterprises for students enrolled in institutions of higher education.  Full-time students who attend institutions of higher education in this state shall be eligible for financial assistance to attend the student internship exchange portion of the program in eligible countries other than the United States.  Priority shall be gi

The program shall be established to encourage international exchanges at industrial and commercial business enterprises for students enrolled in institutions of higher education. Priority shall be given to business internship exchange programs of public and private institutions of higher education in this state, where such programs have been in existence for at least ten successive years prior to December 23, 1997. The program shall include an inventory of the number of students involved in such programs, which shall be maintained by the advisory committee. The program shall also include the development of methods for fostering international trade through exchange programs and through business and entrepreneurial training programs. The program may include the provision of scholarships and other financial assistance in cooperation with the federal government, public and private institutions of higher education, and businesses, to enable students and business people from eligible countries to study and attend training programs in the United States.
