Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, a school district may fulfill its statutory responsibility to maintain permanent records by maintaining or storing such records in a digital or electronic format.  A school district that maintains or stores records in a digital or electronic format shall follow all guidelines, suggestions, or recommendations set forth by the manufacturer of the digital or electronic storage media.  A school district shall not use or maintain digital or electronic storage media beyond the manufacturer-suggested or recommended period of time.
