§ 10 — Definitions

Section 10. As used in this chapter, the following words shall, unless the context requires otherwise, have the following meanings:—''Community college'' shall mean any of the following institutions of higher education: Berkshire Community College, Bristol Community College, Bunker Hill Community College, Cape Cod Community College, Greenfield Community College, Holyoke Community College, Massachusetts Bay Community College, Massasoit Community College, Middlesex Community College, Mount Wachusett Community College, Northern Essex Community College, North Shore Community College, Quinsigamond Community College, Roxbury Community College, and Springfield Technical Community College, and any other community college established after November first, nineteen hundred and eighty-nine; or, if any such community college shall be abolished, any institution succeeding to the principal functions thereof.''Community college affiliate'' any organization or association, in any form, the activities of which are a part of the activities of such community college and are subject to regulation by the trustees of such community college or any research foundation, teaching hospital and associated clinics or other research or educational organization the operation of which in conjunction with such community college is approved by the trustees of such community college as furthering the purposes of the community college.''HEFA'' shall mean the Health and Educational Facilities Authority, established by section four of chapter six hundred and fourteen of the acts of nineteen hundred and sixty-eight, or, if said Health and Educational Facilities Authority shall be abolished, the board, body, or commission succeeding to the principal functions thereof or to which the powers given by said chapter six hundred and fourteen shall be given into law.''Project'' in the case of a participating institution for higher education, a structure or structures suitable for use as a dormitory or other multi-unit housing facility for students, faculty, officers or employees, a dining hall, student union, administration building, academic building, library, laboratory, research facility, classroom, athletic facility, health care facility, maintenance, storage or utility facility and other structures or facilities related to any of the foregoing or required or useful for the instruction of students or the conducting of research or the operation of an institution for higher education, including parking and other facilities or structures essential or convenient for the orderly conduct of such institution for higher education, and shall also include landscaping, site preparation, furniture, equipment and machinery and other similar items necessary or convenient for the operation of a particular facility or structure in the manner for which its use is intended and shall further include any furnishings, equipment, machinery and other similar items necessary or convenient for the operation of an institution of higher education, whether or not such items are related to a particular facility or structure financed by HEFA, but shall not include such items as books, fuel, supplies or other items the cost of which are customarily deemed to result in a current operating charge, and shall not include any facility used or to be used for sectarian instruction or as a place of religious worship nor any facility which is used or to be used primarily in connection with any part of the program of a school or department of divinity for any religious denomination. Project may include any combination of one or more of the foregoing undertaken jointly by one or more participating institutions with each other or with other parties.
