A.Time served as a member of the armed forces of the United States up to but not in excess of three years by any member of the police pension fund employed on or prior to December 31, 1967, who has been an officer, member, or employee of the police department of the city of New Orleans for at least sixteen years, whether before or after becoming an officer, member, or employee of said police department, or both, shall constitute service credit in the police department as used in this Subpart. A. Time served as a member of the armed forces of the United States up to but not in excess of three years by any member of the police pension fund employed on or prior to December 31, 1967, who has been an officer, member, or employee of the police department of the city of New Orleans for at least sixteen years, whether before or after becoming an officer, member, or employee of said police department, or both, shall constitute service credit in the police department as used in this Subpart. The service credit herein authorized shall be only for purposes of the police pension fund and shall be used only for the computation of pension benefits.
B. Application for credit for such service shall be made and evidence thereof shall be furnished to the board of trustees of the police pension fund at any time prior to application for retirement. In addition each person claiming such credit shall pay into the fund for each year of credit claimed an amount equal to five percent of the highest annual salary he received as an officer, member or employee of the police department. This amount may be paid in one lump sum at the time of retirement or in such installments as shall be agreed upon between the board of trustees and the member, provided that all installments must be paid within four years after the date of retirement.
