The Indiana department of transportation or local authority, when charged with the repair or maintenance of a bridge, causeway, or viaduct, may reduce the gross load weight allowed on the structure below the maximum load prescribed in IC 9-20-4-1 and IC 9-20-5 if the authority determines that the maximum load is greater than the bridge, causeway, or viaduct can sustain without serious damage or with safety to the vehicle.
