The corporate authorities of such city may require such further reports and exhibits of the condition and management of such institution as to them shall seem necessary and proper, and may, with the approval of the mayor, remove any inspector of the institution. But any subordinate officer or employee may be removed by the superintendent at his discretion, but immediately upon the removal of such officer or employee, he shall report to the board the name of the person removed and the cause of such removal.
