When the electors in any townships have voted for the consolidation of such townships into a consolidated township road district for road purposes the county clerk of such county shall conduct an election for the selection of a highway commissioner of such township road district. Such election shall be held at the next regular election for township offices. Such election shall be held in accordance with the provisions of the general election law. The highway commissioner of such consolidated township road district so elected and his successors in office shall have the powers and perform the duties of highway commissioners in other road districts.
