(a)The board of trustees shall provide each member of the University of Illinois Police Department without cost to him public liability insurance covering each member for any liability which arises out of his employment to the extent of the insurance policy limits which shall be not less than $50,000, unless such indemnification is provided by a program of self-insurance under subsection (b).
(b)The board of trustees may establish a program of self-insurance to defend members of the University of Illinois Police Department, without cost to them, against liability claims which arise out of their employment, and indemnify them for any such liability in an amount not less than $50,000.
