Text
1.Upon the death of a patient, the county medical examiner shall conduct a preliminary
investigation as required by section 218.64, in accordance with section 331.802.
2.If a patient in a mental health institute dies from any cause, the superintendent of the
institute shall within three days of the date of death, send by certified mail a written notice
of death to all of the following:
a.The decedent’s nearest relative.
b.The clerk of the district court of the county from which the patient was committed.
c.The sheriff of the county from which the patient was committed.
