Should there remain any of the proceeds of the sale of school district bonds after the purpose and object for which the bonds were issued shall have been carried out and performed by the district school board, the surplus then shall be held by the district school board and expended for the exclusive use of the public schools within the school district as the district school board may deem reasonable and proper.
