Any town, on its own initiative or upon a request by the Secretary of the State, and with the approval of the legislative body of the town or, in the case of a town in which the legislative body is a town meeting, the board of selectmen, may require a spare voting tabulator or ballot box to be provided inside any polling place or in a room adjacent to the polling place, for the educational use of students from kindergarten to grade twelve, inclusive. Upon such approval, the registrars shall establish procedures for the use of the tabulator or ballot box, including but not limited to:

(1)Location and preparation of the tabulator or ballot box, (2) duties of tabulator or ballot box tenders, and (3) canvassing the returns. Any such tabulator shall be in addition to the demonstrator or spare

History: P.A. 94-203 authorized town to provide educational purpose voting mechanisms on its own initiative or upon a request by the secretary of the state, authorized the use of ballot boxes, reduced the minimum grade level for participation from fourth grade to kindergarten and added provisions re supervision, effective July 1, 1994; pursuant to P.A. 11-20, “machine” was changed editorially by the Revisors to “tabulator”, effective May 24, 2011.
