§ 14-12o — Courtesy registration when proof of ownership pending.

(a) The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles may issue a registration, limited to six months in duration, for any motor vehicle for which adequate proof of ownership is pending, including a motor vehicle previously registered in another state that is awaiting the out-of-state title or title lien release required for obtaining a permanent registration in this state. Such registration shall be known as a courtesy registration and in no case shall such registration be issued without proper sale documents in the name of the person seeking to obtain such registration and without meeting all other requirements for the registration of the motor vehicle. (b) For six months or any part thereof, the fee for a courtesy registration shall be one-sixth of the amount specified for a three-year permanent registration, one-quarter of the amount specified for a two-year permanent registration and one-half of the amount specified for a one-year permanent registration. The owner of a motor vehicle with a courtesy registration may receive a permanent registration upon presentation of documents to the commissioner demonstrating proof of ownership. No part of the fee paid for a courtesy registration shall be refunded or applied to the fee for the permanent registration of the motor vehicle.
