The tax hereby imposed shall be paid by each motor carrier quarterly to the Commissioner of Revenue Services on or before the last day of January, April, July and October of each year and calculated upon the amount of gasoline or other motor fuel used in its operations within this state by such carrier during the quarter ending with the last day of the preceding month. The amount of motor fuel used in the operations of any motor carrier within this state shall be such proportion of the total amount of such motor fuel used in its entire operations within and without this state as the total number of miles traveled within this state bears to the total number of miles traveled within and without this state.
