The maximum area allowed to a district for attendance units in junior high schools composed of grades 7 to 9, inclusive, or 7 to 10, inclusive, as the case may be, shall be determined pursuant to this section, rather than Sections 17044 and 17046. This section shall not apply to junior high schools composed of grades 7 and 8 only. The maximum area allowed for attendance units in junior high schools shall be determined by computing, in accordance with this section, the number of square feet for the attendance units at each junior high school attendance center of the district, and totaling the number of square feet so determined for all attendance units in all such junior high school attendance centers of the district.
