Effective at the beginning of the next term of office after May 3, 1988, the mayor shall receive as compensation for his or her services the sum of six hundred dollars ($600) per month, provided that the total does not exceed seven thousand two hundred dollars ($7,200) per annum. Each council member shall receive as compensation for his or her services the sum of five hundred dollars ($500) per month, provided that the total does not exceed six thousand dollars ($6,000) per annum. The mayor and council members may be reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in and about the performance of their duties, only if the expenses are approved by the council at a regular meeting. No salary increase may be made effective except at the beginning of a new term.
