Text

(a)If any firefighter or policeman is killed while in the performance of his or her duty, or dies as a result of an injury received in the line of duty, or dies from any cause while in service as a result of his or her service, or dies from any cause while in service or on the retirement roll after having served for more than 10 years, the last five years of which were continuous, the board shall cause to be paid monthly to the widow or widower to whom the deceased, if retired, was married at the time of retirement during his or her natural life or until he or she remarries, a sum equal to 20 percent of the salary of the deceased firefighter or policeman.
(b)The deceased firefighter or policeman leaves surviving him or her a child under 16 years of age, the board shall cause to be paid,
