(a)If any firefighter or policeman is killed while in the performance of his or her duty, or dies as a result of an injury received in the line of duty, or dies from any cause while in service as a result of his or her service, or dies from any cause while in service or on the retirement roll after having served for more than 10 years, the last five years of which were continuous, the board shall cause to be paid monthly to the widow or widower to whom the deceased, if retired, was married at the time of retirement during his or her natural life or until he or she remarries, a sum equal to 20 percent of the salary of the deceased firefighter or policeman.

(b)The deceased firefighter or policeman leaves surviving him or her a child under 16 years of age, the board shall cause to be paid,

(b) The deceased firefighter or policeman leaves surviving him or her a child under 16 years of age, the board shall cause to be paid, for the benefit of the child, monthly, to the mother or father if living, a sum equal to 15 percent of the salary of the deceased; but not more than 30 percent of the salary of the deceased firefighter or policeman shall be paid to the children of the deceased in any case. The payments shall be continued so long as the child lives with the mother or father, is under the age of 16 years, and is supported by the mother or father. If the child has no mother or father, or if the mother or father dies during the time the child is entitled to benefits under this part, payments may be made to the person having control and custody of the child, or to some other person, as the board may determine.
(c) In the event the deceased firefighter or policeman is not survived by a widow, widower, or child who are entitled to benefits under subsections (a) or (b), but does leave surviving him or her a widowed mother who is entirely dependent upon him or her for support, the board shall pay to the mother monthly, during her natural life or so long as she remains unmarried, a sum equal to 20 percent of the deceased’s salary.
